While more than 49,000 people reside in Chatham County, North Chatham County is home to approximately 3,600. This significantly smaller populous creates a much more intimate environment in which to live, evidenced by the area’s quaint downtown district of specialty shops, antique shops, boutiques, sidewalk cafes, restaurants, bars and corner stores. Due to proximity to both The Triangle Region and the Piedmont Triad Area, North Chatham County has taken on the appearance of a bedroom community that enables locals to benefit from the peaceful tranquility of a small town feel with the liveliness and excitement of a big city just a few short miles away.
The Research Triangle, commonly referred to as “The Triangle,” is a region in the Piedmont of North Carolina which is anchored by the cities of Raleigh, Durham and the town of Chapel Hill. The major research universities of North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are also located in this region. Despite the presence of these academic institutions, the area is referred to as the Research Triangle because of the development of the Research Triangle Park in the 1950s, a public business complex that became home to numerous high-tech companies and enterprises. Today, the business park is still home to many leading technology companies and is a major source of employment opportunities for residents living throughout Chatham County. The Triangle’s population also remains as the most educated and affluent in the Southeastern United States.
Not to be confused with The Triangle, “The Triad” is a region in the Piedmont that consists of the area surrounding the cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. The area is connected by Interstate 40 and Interstate 85 and is served by the Piedmont Triad International Airport. Long known as one of the primary manufacturing and transportation hubs of the southeastern U.S., the Triad is also an important educational and cultural region and occupies a prominent place in the history of the American Civil Rights Movement.
Eleven institutions of higher education are located within The Triad, including Wake Forest University, Salem College, Winston-Salem State University, North Carolina School of the Arts, High Point University, Guilford College, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro College, Bennett College, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and Elon University. Three boarding schools also call the Triad home including Salem Academy, Oak Ridge Academy, and the American Hebrew Academy.
Major art and historical museums contribute to the cultural climate of the region, including the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), the Reynolda House of American Art, Old Salem, High Point Historical Museum, Mendenhall Plantation, the Weatherspoon Museum of Modern Art, Blandwood Mansion and Gardens, the Greensboro Historical Museum, the Guilford Battleground National Military Park, and the Charlotte Hawkins Brown State Museum. With the presence of so many colleges, universities, museums and historical attractions, it is easy to see why this environment is very conducive to raising children.
North Chatham County lies not just in the center of the state, but in the center of the state’s most prosperous economic centers. To this end, locals experience the finest in southern living whether they are here to start a family, find employment, pursue an education, or retire. The area is filled with a plethora of economic and recreational opportunities, features attractive housing at affordable prices and enables residents to enjoy life in a safe and peaceful bedroom community just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of The Triangle and The Triad so that a quiet night spent relaxing on the patio is simply that; quiet and relaxing.
